No Sampling Allowed…

This sign in a Marshall’s Store caught my eye when I was wandering down the food aisle.

Marshalls sign

Sorry for the blurriness, I snapped both signs rather fast before some muncher could figure out what I was doing.

marshalls

Apparently the store is having an issue with customers opening packages and sampling the goods.   I asked a sales person about the sign and she confirmed that the staff is always finding half-eaten packages of candy, cookies, and nuts. Sometimes, completely empty bags are found tucked in among the towels or rugs!

Now, I can’t for the life of me understand why some people feel entitled to do this, and I hardly think that any kind of signage is really going to deter them, but I guess some folks have rationalized that a quick sample really isn’t stealing!  In my mind, this is still a type of theft and is a situation worthy of calling the cops.   If someone had snitched anything else in the store, whether it held a small or a large value,  that person would be held until the law showed up. Why should this be any different?   What do you think?

Seriously???
Funny because twice this week at the grocery store I have seen opened packages of crackers...like really you feel this is OK to do? Bring a snack with ya next time LOL!

1st of all - yuck! Wonder how many people buy packages that someone has opened already. Maybe they tasted it, didn't like it and put it back on the shelf.

2nd, I see Moms at the local grocery stores feeding their kids store food while they are shopping. Now maybe the Mom is honest and actually pays for the item, but I'm thinking as long as the kid finsihes up before they check out that Mom may not bring it up to the cashier.

I actually saw a woman open a jar of jam at Marshalls and smell it! Screwed the lid on and put it back on the shelf!!! I check the "pop" tops of all jars carefully:@)

I also have seen this happen.. moms give their kids a package to keep them happy then put it back on the shelf..with some missing! I even saw a boy open a soda bottle, drink then put the cap on and back into the cooler...
I've learned to be very careful when buying a jar or package... too bad!
Good post!

I believe it all. I am in retail. Kids think they are entitled to the balloons at my balloon center, or mom's let the kids play with the plush animals and chew on an ear. I love the tooth marks left on the greeting cards. I could go on and on and on....

I have noticed that at Marshals and other stores too. What is up with that? Why do people think that is okay? I'm surprised their cameras haven't caught people.

Nothing surprises me, Sue. Just shakin' my head.

It's definitely shoplifting. It's not a good thing to teach kids, either. Just eat it and we'll pay later. It crosses the line. I see people at the grocery store sampling the grapes before they buy them (or don't) and I wonder two things.

Why do they think it's OK to eat something they haven't paid for?

Why do they think it's OK to eat produce that hasn't been washed?

That having been said, I think there are some exceptions to eating before buying. (not eating and NOT buying, just before buying) I once saw a woman pass out in line at the store from insulin shock. She was holding a bottle of orange juice but wouldn't drink it before she bought it.

I agree it is shoplifting. I learned that at an early age when my dad made me take a tootsie roll back in the grocery store that I had snatched. It made an impression on me at an early age, stealing is stealing no matter what the cost of the item is. Great post Sue!!!

I believe it. Really disgusting. At the supermarket there was a soup "bar" and someone actually tasted from the ladle. I told the manager. People are nuts!

I have seen opened packages in stores before. You really don't want to get me started on things like this. The "entitlement" attitude has got on my last nerve. Nuff said.
Have a great week.

I can't imagine ever doing something like that, or why anyone would feel as if they could. I don't think the signs will help at all...in fact, it may make it worse.

My husband recently bought some Ben and Jerry's ice cream. WHen he got it home the plastic wrap was gone and someone had eaten part of the ice cream. Yep, alot of nerve.
Speaking of my husband....he is doing okay. I will see to it that he does that therapy.....thanks.

First of all... that is disgusting and second, that is stealing!!!! How crazy are people?!?

Sue, I know this goes on all of the time, and it seems that people rationalize that, since everyone else is doing it, I can too. I've never understood it, and it scares me to think of what I might buy that someone else has had their hands on. One time, in the checkout line at Wal Mart, I watched a woman open some chap stick; rub it on her child's lips; put the cap back on and return it to the rack!! I was horrified, and picked up the chap stick and turned it in to the checker when I was checking out. Then I started wondering how many times this is done and nobody sees it! YUK! laurie

After reading yours and the other stories here I'm totally grossed out! I guess I've also been totally oblivious and have not noticed this going on!
I don't know what's worse, the stealing (and YES it IS stealing!) or the fact that someone may of had their grubby little fingers in the stuff I'm buying and eating! Omgosh and the chapstick story from Laurie!!! Gack!
I'm such a germ-a-phobe I don't even like to eat at buffet style restaurants... too many other people's cooties!!!
From now on I will definitely be paying much closer attention to see if this is going on in the places I shop! I'll also be inspecting packaging much closer from now on too!!! Thanks Sue!

I think this is shop lifting..I see this all the timeat stores Sue..Like people eating the grapes and not thinking there not stealing? Hugs and smiles Gloria

I agree it's absolutely wrong! Does the shop have tamper evident packaging? I don't like to buy packages that aren't sealed. Now I do confess that I always taste the grapes at the grocery store before I buy them!!! But, they usually have a package open, I believe, just for that purpose.

Unbelievable! I have seen people snatch things from the salad bar in the markets, and kids take a bit of rooks in those bins and put them back. So I am not buying that's for sure! Just raises the costs for the rest of us!
Laurie's story is very scary!

One of my pet peeves is when parents give their child say a bag of chips or cookies...unopened...the child plays with it, throws it around, crushes all the inside and then the parent doesn't even buy it. They just let the child use it as a toy!

xinex said...

I don't understand why people would do that either. Espeically because they have to open the package to sample it. And who would want to buy a food item if it has been opened? So I agree, that is definitely stealing...Christine

Yes, it's the same as stealing. It does surprise me (not sure why in the age we live in) that people would even think to try this.

Just maybe the sign will make at least one person think twice.

I've seen people open the lotions and sprays and smell them but not the food. ICK, ICK, ICK.

Yes, theft!!! But too, I have opened a package of crackers in the grocery to keep my youngest from having a severe melt down(probably 3 times), but I ALWAYS PAID FOR THEM. I mean, she was eating them, so I needed to pay for that. Wal-Mart used to give out cookies for kids under 3(may have been a different age) when my oldest was little, so I didn't have to purchase those, but I would have. Again, sampling with out it being a sample is theft. Just the other day, the youngest dropped a drink in the store and it broke, the cashier kept saying that he would take care of it, but I made him charge me...She "consumed" it, so I felt obligated to pay.

I'm with you 100% on this issue.
Candy, clothes, etc. If you haven't paid for it and take it --It's stealing.
I haven't seen this sign yet but have seen open packages before. Crazy world we live in!

bj said...

Well, the way I feel about is that I would be putting up a sign that said
"IF YOU ARE CAUGHT SAMPLING...UH...STEALING FOOD HERE, YOUR TONGUE WILL BE PIERCED AND YOU WILL HAVE TO WEAR A RING IN IT FROM NOW ON.!!"
ewwwwww, I am sooo mean! :))
All kidding aside, it is wrong!!

I know it happens!! I have seen it especially at Krogers!I did point out a few folks and they got caught! I turned 'em in after watching them devour a box and then toss it away. Oh, and she was in uniform. A POLICE uniform. Yep.
She got a bit surly with the manager but admitted it. Said she was GOING to pay. Yea right. Don't know what they did with her & her husband. Hopefully something!
Love,
Sue

It's so sad that this rude behavior is so rampart that the management had to put a sign up! I think they should also add that anyone found "sampling" would be arrested for shoplifting.

Sue said...

this is too funny...I'm assuming when you say Marshalls you mean like TJMaxx Marshall's...not some grocery store....God bless those people that sample the crap on those shelves...I always wonder just how long that stuff has been there or better yet where it spent time before landing on the shelves of a discount outlet....I say let them eat all they want!!
