De-cluttering, cleaning, and looking for the light at the end of the tunnel…

light-end-tunnel

Now I know some of you remember that I said I was going to keep my holiday decor up a little longer  than usual, but I couldn’t take it any longer and I actually started taking down the holiday decor two days after Christmas. Problem is that I just finished today!   How could it have possibly taken this long?

It’s been one heckuva time-consuming job over the course of the last 13 days.  Considering that it took about three weeks to put out, I knew that it would take a while to pack up.  But this long?  Whew- after the 33rd box was packed up this afternoon, you can bet that I let out one major sigh of relief.  Except that I’m not quite done yet- all those boxes and bins still need to be hauled up to the attic. Guess I’d better tell the husband that is what he’ll be helping me with tomorrow morning, shouldn’t I?   I think I’ll wait til tonight to spring that on him!

It hasn’t just been packing things up that has been keeping me busy non-stop.  If I had just been doing that, it would have taken me about three or four days.  But  no….   in between packing things up, I’ve been  cleaning, re-organizing, and purging the house of everything that I’ve decided is just plain clutter- one room at a time!   Cabinets, closets, drawers, shelves……..   aaaggghhhh!!   I knew I had a lot of things, but oh baby…… I just own too much stuff!!!   I’m at the point that I am contemplating a booth at a local re-sale shop or one humongous tag sale.

But since there is no space at the shop I’d like to rent a space from and the winter weather in Ohio is not exactly conducive to having a yard sale, I am now stuck with the garage storage room and an entire extra bedroom piled high with things that I once thought I couldn’t live without.  What’s a girl to do?   I’m looking for the light at the end of the tunnel, and so far, it’s really dark in here!!!

I thought I would purge a bit as the Christmas things came down, but suddenly I can't part with anything. Go figure. I just know someday I will think of a place to put something I just got rid of!

Happy Weekend!

Jane

Hi Sue, I told my husband to just kick me if I started putting out so much Christmas stuff next year! I still have a couple of bins that need to go up two flights of stairs to the attic.
Hugs,
Sherry

I had wondered where you were. I thought my word verification turned you off, he he....it's gone.....and look for more changes real soon.....yippee.
I have the answer......p-retend you are moving to a much smaller space. When we had our house listed we got rid of so much. Think I am kidding.....two dumpsters, a donation truck, many many trips to Goodwill, and lots of other trash day overloads. Still have more, but it's all good.

You've done well. MOST of mine is away, but I have to admit, at the end it wasn't as organized as I'd like. And then there was a whole little section that I completely forgot about. Where on earth is that going?

I haven't done the purging part yet. Just the cleaning part. I could definately stand to do some more organizing, but I just got to the point where I needed for it all to be gone!

I'd love to have you join Seasonal Sundays.

You are so good! I am trying to purge, I feel like you, way too much stuff!
I am making up bags to bring to Savers. I just hope I don't buy anything while I am there!

My big storage issue is ornaments:@) Once I got rid of all their original boxes/packaging they were condensed considerably! Makes for a bigger challenge unpacking... but I have to pick my battles and in my pre-season enthusiasm it's not a problem!
I'll bet you have one great yard sale in the spring:@)

I admire you for de-cluttering and when spring comes you can have a garage sale. I put stuff out for the Hope truck a couple times a year.

Oh Sue, I'm right there with you. My Christmas decor was down and packed away rather quickly but now I'm faced with gutting {yes, it's that severe} with each room. Kevin is gone for a few weeks so I'm taking full advantage of this and getting rid of *treasures* we don't use. I already have an impressive pile in the basement awaiting our tag sale in the spring. The sad part is that I just had one in the fall. Hmmm ... maybe I could be a contestant for the Hoarders show! :)

Sue, I will not put out as much next year. Nope. Nada. I have way too much stuff, too and will probably take it to a local consignment shop and store the stuff I want to keep. Went to Home Depot today and loaded up on big containers so I can organize my mess in the bonus room. Good luck with yours!

Sue,
I'm right there with you...my family room is full of Christmas bins...I have been working all day on filling them up...it's a lot of work, but I LOVE decorating my home for the holidays.

Blessings,

Hang on to it right now, then when warmer temps arrive, have a big yardsale. Also, the shop may have a space available soon. I am going thru my decorations one container at a time as I put everything back in storage. I am down to 2 large containers of ornaments, and some other holiday items, many of which I did not even use this year - time to rethink those. My daughter claimed several things this year.
Enjoy your weekend.

What? Christmas is over? I have to put this stuff away? Why bother. Christmas will be coming right on back again in few (50)weeks.
I was going to do this today and instead did absolutely nothing. Now I have to get ready to go to a friends for dinner so I can't start now. Maybe tomorrow.

I feel your pain..I try to do 1-2 closets a day. This spring I will be really going threw the basement - that is going to be a nightmare. I've keep purging and it still seems like I have far to much "stuff"

It sure is hard to muster as must joy in the taking down process Sue. To encourage you my artifical tree is waiting for my hubs to take it down. Everything else is put in boxes. ♥O

We are so on the same page. I just packed up the last box and still have to put all of them into their storage space. Full day tomorrow with other obligations so that won't get done. Plus purging has been on my agenda as well. 5 huge contractor bags for Good Will plus a 9' artificial tree that I will not deal with one more year! The end of the tunnel seems miles away. We need to do a Southern Ohio junk sale soon!!!

Sue my husband helped me carry up the Christmas bins to the attic today. He asked me not to buy anymore Christmas decorations/dishes/etc., next year -- and I think he's right! While we were at it we also purged a lot of stuff we never use anymore from the attic. If I ever moved it would take me a year just to clear out the basement, garage, and attic..lol A lot of it is stuff my kids left behind but don't want me to throw away.

I just got mine put away this week and am so glad! I also think I have a case of pre-spring cleaning and have been organizing and purging cupboards and drawers as well! Happy Weekend to you!

Sue,
Sounds like you're snowed under with boxes and more boxes. I would hang on to it and have a huge yard sale in the spring. I know it's hard to wait cause when you clean out, you just want it gone, but think of all the money you'll make to buy more stuff :)

Greetings Friend,
I too have dismantled Christmas around my home, the boxes have been packed, the twinkle lights are down, Hubby has taken the boxes out to storage...
but for some reason this year, I just don't have the heart to take down the tree.
The ornaments are all off leaving only the lights & poinsetta garland, but I guess I want the MAGIC of Christmas to last just a little longer. Maybe because it was a Christmas of magic & miracles, I'm not quite ready to let all that go yet.
Soon, but not today! ;)
Smiles,
Susie

This year for Christmas (even tho I did not decorate this year) I got a garage! It is one of those huge tent garages like you see at big events like outdoor dog shows or pro auto races. So come spring when hopefully I can get it out of the HUGE heavy box and set up, before I even think about using it for the van and lawnmower and all those other outdoor things I am setting up the largest garage sale this neighborhood has ever seen.

Without a garage (yes, I have barns but all with leaky roofs) I could not set things up and leave them overnight or in bad weather.
Of course I have to be just as careful not to consider my new space as a collection area.

I too thinned out my Christmas stuff but I suspect I will thin some more next year. I'm just not putting out stuff like I used too. If I could find a shop I like I would rent a spot too. Anything to thin stuff out.

Still haven't finished, because we went to the lake. We needed the lake. Managed to clean out two closets there. Brought a truckload back for the girls to go through, then it's donation time.

You sound just like me, Sue. Even with the store, I am having a hard time parting with anything...Christine

I hope you do what makes you happy, and that you won't regret. I would suggest sorting what you can't live without and what you could do without, but I live close enough that you may want to throttle me, so Good luck? :)

You might as well make some money and sell it!
Vaya con Dios, muchacha! I'm scared of my closets...

Everyone here is in the same boat. But it's too cold to work in the attic and the basement. My daughter even looked into the price of a rental booth at our local market. We could have the greatest blog land sale in the world with all our Christmas castaways!

Sue, got my stuff up to the attic yesterday...Steve got it all up there thank goodness! It was taking up a TON of room in my laundry room and making me crazy! We got snow Monday and now I am ready for that to be gone as well!!

Decluttering is good for the soul...I am working on it here...
