California Dreamin’ on Outdoor Wednesday

When I look at pictures of our trip to the Monterey Bay area  in the spring, I get nostalgic and wish we were still there enjoying some of the most  beautiful scenery I have ever seen.  These photos were taken as we drove along 17 Mile Drive.

The Lone Cypress

We encountered this little guy when we stopped to view the Lone Cypress. He came over to the split rail fence, stood up on his hind legs, and stared at us. I spoke to him and what do you think he did? He started begging for food with his front paws, just like a dog does!  Well, that was just so cute, how could I possibly deny him a treat?

I called him over and he sauntered over to take Cheerios from my hand.  He stayed with us until he reached his fill, much to the delight of curious onlookers who couldn’t believe he was so friendly.  He was obviously very used to human contact and I’m sure his begging performance  continues to keep him fed to this day.

Further in from the coastline,  this young deer made his way across the road and up a small hill. We slowed our car, rolled down the window, and called out to him. He looked right up at us for about 10-15 seconds  before he took off. He looked so young, so I hope when he scampered off, he was looking for his mother.

Thanks to Susan at Southern Daydreamer for hosting Outdoor  Wednesday. Be sure to visit her and everyone else who is participating.

Hi Sue!
Your photos bring back so many memories...I traveled this route about 40 years ago and remember it vividly. The Lone Cypress is so interesting...and those rocks are magnificent.
(I don't remember the squirrel, though...maybe his great-grandparents.) Thanks for the journey...

Jane (Artfully Graced)
ps Thanks for your sweet comments on my post.

It's all so beautiful. My husband was stationed there while he did his grad work ~ would love to go back there!

I think we should dub you "The Wild Animal Whisperer"! Weren't you afraid that little guy might bite your? And what exactly did you call to that deer to get him to pose for you? "Hey, deer, I need a photo for my blog!" LOL!

Sue what beautiful photos! The picture with the Cypress tree with the ocean in the back was just breath taking. I can't believe that squirrel came right up to you like that. I have to agree, others must be feeding that little rascal. And what a great picture you have captured of the fawn. Have a fabulous day!

You're very brave to get so close to that rat with a furry tail. I mean squirrel!! I'm sorry, I have a love/hate relationship with them, but they ARE cute!
Beautiful pictures of the ocean, and that cypress tree! I would love to live by water. A lake, a river, a pond, anything!

Beautiful pix. Lovely pix. Always great pix here.

And you're nuts to feed that squirrel. He's scary and maybe a rare flesh-eating hybrid.

"Better safe than Sue w/nine fingers," that's what I always say.

Those pictures are beautiful. We used to have a squirrel that ate out of our hands. One day he ran up my husband's pant leg.We decided he was getting a bit too friendly.

Lori E said...

Ha, Balisha that is hysterical.
The deer was saying Where are my stinkin' Cheerios? not where is my mama.

A few years ago I traveled the same route and I was just blown away by the sheer beauty of it all. It's always an extra bonus when some Disney-like critters add to the experience. Yes Ethel, the deer looks mad..out of Cheerios!

Great pictures. We have way to many squirrels around here and they are very destructive, so feeding them is not encouraged.

Pam said...

We don't have any friendly squirrels around here, just "unfriendly" ones. The picture of the cypress tree is so pretty!

You know what they say "the grass is always greener." I exclaim over the gorgeous turning of the leaves on the East Coast...and the beautiful white layer of snow and the beauty of watching it softly fall and the gorgeous Springtimes they have...the changing of the seasons. It is all beautiful...and then I see pictures like these...and remember. My love and I took that trip..more than once and saw all those sights. That very lone Cyprus tree...all of it. Our last trip together before he died, "The Wind Beneath My Wings was playing on the radio as we rounded the turns along the 1 highway. I belong here. I was born here..lived all my life here and I will die here. California. I love her and thank you for reminding me how much! :)
